While I love playing Classical music and adding the perfect touch to a wedding ceremony or a
cocktail hour, I do believe a harp has more to offer. Hearing the word harp often conjures images
of a heavenly person playing beautiful music. Indeed, the harp sounds very gorgeous; however, it
is my belief that the harp does not have to sound fluffy.
A harp has many features that allow harpists to perform non-conventional music. Harpists may
play close to the soundboard to create a Spanish guitar sound, or interlace a piece of cloth or
paper in the strings to mute and distort the sound. Knocking on the wood or hitting metal spoons
on the strings also provides various fun sounds.
If there is a way to distort the sound of a harp, I have tried or currently am working on it. Of
course, harps will not sound as cutting edge as electric guitars, but they are just as capable of
playing alternative styles of music. Some of my favorite styles of music to play include classic rock
and alternative. I have even arranged a two-harp version of "Dueling Banjos," in which I have
labeled it "Dueling Harps."
If you are thinking of an alternative styled event and require the innovative talents of a harpist,
please contact me.
"I always thought a harp was limited to classical music. I was amazed hearing Stairway to Heaven! It was definitely cool!" -- Gigi Greene
